Introduction

The Orthodox Catholic faith is growing rapidly around the United States and Maine is no exception. Our small Antiochian mission has grown from seven individuals to over eighty. We have sojourned together through some incredibly difficult times: the mission was founded during the height of Covid... our first chapel was setup during the dead of winter in an unheated barn in rural Maine.... and once we experienced growth we began renting a small chapel from the local Congregational Church of Rockland which now cannot fit our entire congregation.

During this time we have attempted to make ourselves good stewards of ministry as much as possible, despite our lack of money and manpower. St. Euphemia has been overseeing the missions of St. Botolph (in Boston) and the Nativity of the Virgin Mary (in Desloge, Missouri) and helping them both grow into firm Antiochian communities that are self-supporting. St. Mary's grew from three people to over thirty, and now has a seminarian training toward the priesthood. St. Botolph's also continues to grow under the oversight and support of St. Euphemia, going from three parishioners to almost ten. The small chapel that we helped build in Dexter, ME has now blossomed forth into a beautiful weekday station chapel for the OCA mission in Brewster.

It is our greatest joy and solemn duty to serve Christ in this way and to imitate his kenotic example. Today I am writing to all the parishioners and friends of St. Euphemia to consider now helping us as we step into the next phase of being a mission: purchasing our own building.

Why now? Why is this urgent?

We can no longer remain in our present chapel space. Factoring in our summer residents, we have over eighty regular congregants during the peak season of the Mid-Coast Maine life. Our rented chapel only allows 50-60 at maximum. Last year during the summer the heat in our building was unbearable. During our St. Euphemia feast day, some of our altar servers had to even leave the chapel so as to not collapse from the heat.

We are the only Orthodox Church in the Mid-Coast, Knox County and Lincoln County region of Maine. It is a 1hr and 20min+ drive to any other Orthodox parish. This is our opportunity to plant the flag of Orthodoxy in this unchurched region of Maine!

What building are we hoping to purchase?

231 Park Street

Rockland ME 04841

We are hoping to purchase this office building to convert it into a proper Orthodox Church. It is a very spacious building of 5,500 square feet. Here is what is possible if we acquire this building:

a. Large beautiful sanctuary that can fit 80-100 congregants

b. Spacious parish hall

c. Room for a small home-school co-op and church bookstore

This building is already within the zoning for a Church, bookstore, and school house. It has a full HVAC cooling system and is in extremely good condition. We have enough skilled parishioners that we can turn this New England office into a beautiful New England Orthodox Church, with an interior that reflects the heavenly reality of our Divine Worship.

Is this building affordable and sustainable for St. Euphemia?

We have been blessed with a strong congregational commitment to supporting the St. Euphemia mission, and we are currently able to self-sustain if we get out of the "rent-trap." Our present budget from self-raised tithing is enough to pay a mortgage, electric, utilities, and pay a priestly stipend.

How much have you already raised on your own?

Our parishioners have been working hard to build up a building fund. We have raised $42,000 toward the purchase of a building. In order to receive a pre-approval from Bangor Bank to put in an offer on this building, we need to raise $75,000 before the opportunity is lost.

Any additional donations over the $75,000 will go directly to handling the closing costs of the building and the beautification of the temple. Our building fundraiser page will be updated daily with how close we are to reaching the goal of $75,000. It can be located here:

The Road to $75,000

We would only need 8 donors at the level of $10,000

We would only need 15 donors at the level of $5,000

We would only need 38 donors at the level of $2,000
